Owl Moon - "M" - and tapping out words

Sound of the Week - M
Book of the WeekOwl Moon - by Jane Yolen
Habit of the Month - Self Control
Phonics - tapping out sounds in CVC words
Mom of the Month - Rachel Reiboldt

This will be our first week of HOMEWORK.  The students seem excited!  Every night your child will bring home a page or activity to be completed at home.  The first few weeks your child might need guidance, but most of the pages or activities have been done many times in class.  Yes, they should color and complete...always putting forth their best effort and return in their red folder the next day.   Please text us with questions.

Here is a small clip of Jane Yolen's  explanation of her her book Owl Moon, from her website.  This book is outstanding!
This gentle tone poem about a father taking his daughter (yes–it’s a girl!) out owling one cold wintry night is arguably my best book. Certainly it’s my best known book. The 1988 Caldecott Medal winner for John Schoenherr’s beautiful, frosty, tender, exacting pictures, the book has been translated into nine languages, been an ALA Notable Book, a Reading Rainbow book, a Junior Literary Guild selection, and on dozens of state award lists. Though I envisioned the book in the little woods near our house, Schoenherr used his own farm in New Jersey as the setting. The father is my husband David, the child our daughter Heidi. It’s not an exact story of David taking Heidi out owling, but an amalgam of many such trips he did with all of our children. I purposefully didn’t mention the child’s gender, though the flap copy gives the secret away.

As you probably heard, today we started tapping out cvc words (consonant-vowel-consonant).  The students were comfortable with tapping even on our first day.  Please ask your child to show you how to tap the words - mat, map, sad and sap.  Lefties tap with their left hands left to right.  Righties tap with right hand left to right.

Your children love to learn!  Thanks for sharing them with me.

Z Week - A Trip to Africa!

Week of January 13-16

Sound of the Week - z
Phonics Sounds - z and q (Sam will be thrilled!)
Book of the Week - Here on the African Savannah
Mom of the Month - Rachel Reiboldt
Habit - Self control

Tuesday January 14th - narratives (report cards) are available at noon in the elementary office.  We do not send these home in back packs at PCS.  School requires that you come in and pick up in elementary office for K-2.  Let me know if you will not be able to come in and I will try to help you.

The  African savanna is a favorite location to study each year for my kindergarten students!  The children love learning more about Africa and it's giraffes, hippos, elephants, tigers, etc.
The book of the week a sing songy type narrative that allows the children to learn more about each of these animals and more.  My students are always reciting the book by the end of the week.  If your child has an African animal stuffed pet that they would like to bring this week - we would love to discuss.

Our kind Mom of the Month, Rachel Reiboldt,  will be bringing a traditional African meal of beans and rice on Thursday for our special event.   We will enjoy our meal after we take a Safari trip around Mt. Kilimanjaro!  This safari slide show is compliments of Mrs. Williams' trip to Tanzania  to minister in the school that PCS built and supports.

Dont' forget that we will not have school next Monday, January 20th in honor of MLK Day.

Your children are precious.  Blessed to have this time with them.  Kay

Welcome Back! January 7-9

Week of January 7-9

Sound of the Week - Review of Letters to Date
Book of the Week - Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening - Robert Frost
Habit of the Month - Responsibility
Mom of the Month - Rachel Reiboldt

Happy New Year!  I hope that your holidays were special and somewhat restful.  I can't wait to see  your children tomorrow! (I'm at school typing at this moment and just heard Forsyth schools are closed tomorrow - historically, public schools tend to close due to low temperatures at bus stops and transportation.  Since this is not an issue at Perimeter, we will be open if possible.  Remember to check wsb weather for closing updates and I will send email if I hear anything earlier).

This week will be a review of letter keyword sounds to date and basically everything that that we have studied in math and narration.   Our book of the week, Stopping By Woods on a Snowy Evening is actually a poem with fantastic illustrations.  It is a great book to study this week with our chilly temperatures!

As we continue in January, we will begin many learning activities that encourage reading readiness.  The students grow so much in January-May.  Please celebrate your child's growth and desire to learn.

Please be aware of the following upcoming dates:

January 7th - First Day Back
January 10th - Father Daughter Dance (this is a fantastic night - registration still open).
January 14th - Report Cards Available.  Pick up in Elementary Office after 12:00.
January 18th - Investigating Perimeter School - 6:30 p.m. - encourage friends to attend.
January 20th - MLK Day - No School
January 29th - Lower Elementary Chapel - (chapel dress)
