Reminders for the Week:

Late Start - Wednesday, December 11th,  school starts at 9:20
Service Project - December 12th led by Pam Hamilton and Melinda Rowand.  Please reply to email about items that your family will donate.
Please lift our class up daily in prayer.  It's a wonderful, busy time...but we want to keep our focus on the Real Reason for our celebrations - our precious Savior!  These kids are so in awe of the story of the Nativity.  It is a joy to start a craft project or story as they ask many questions with wonder and amazement.

Our class song for the pageant is Angels We Have Heard on High.  I downloaded the iTunes Cedarmont Kids version and used in classroom on Thursday.  Sweet Children's CD!
We will also recite from Luke as a class.  I will work on this in class this week and send home tomorrow afternoon.  Maggie, Sydney and Evan will recite single scriptures and their mamas are aware of this!  Please email me with any questions.
Very important Pageant Information:
Dress Rehearsal - December 18th - Melinda Rowand will be helping.
Pageant - December 19th at 11:00 - Melinda Rowand helping with snack/party and then will help with costumes.

We will try on costumes this week to see if any changes are needed.
Please see important info below about your child's costume.  Please ask any questions needed for clarification.  We are incredibly blessed to have all of the costume items that have been made by parents in past Kindergarten classes.

I plan to take a picture of a classmate in the costume and will send to you to better clarify.

Girl Angels - wearing white gowns-  will need white tights, ballet slippers or white shoes, long-sleeved white shirt (either turtle neck or crew neck).

Boys Angels - wearing silver gowns - will wear khaki pants, short sleeved white t-shirt and chapel shoes (dark).

G Week! "Jacob's Gift'

Week of December 2-5

Happy First Day of December and 1st Sunday of Advent!   Wendy Williams, one of our Kindergarten teachers, compiled an Advent Devotional that we sent home in backpacks on our last day of school before Thanksgiving Break.  Hopefully you can locate and discuss with family tonight.

I have missed your children over our week break and have lifted each of your families in prayer as we enter this wonderful season of celebrating our Savior's Birth!

Many of the kindergarten teachers will send home letters this week detailing the reasons that we only discuss the birth of Christ in Celebration of Christmas in our kindergarten program.  Honestly, I know your hearts, Christ is your family's focus for the season and we know that you will encourage your child to keep this focus when they are at school.  We will say, "we have so much to talk about Jesus' birth that we don't have time to talk about anything else at school".....so no discussion of Santa, elves, etc. at school.

Sound of the Week - hard /g/
Phonics - review of letters/sounds to date and Handwriting book
Book of the Week - Jacob's Gift by Max Lucado
Habit of the Month - Responsibility
Mom of the Month - Melinda Rowand

Pam Hamilton and Melinda Rowand will be leading our Service Project on December 12th.  We will be serving the Security team at Perimeter Church.  You will be receiving email from Pam in the next week detailing items needed to create goodie bags for each of the seven security men.  We are combining with Mrs. Jernigan's class for this project.

Thank you, Pam Hamilton for being our awesome Mom of the Month for November...don't know what we would have done without you at our Thanksgiving Feast - your music blessed many.

We learned last week  that our class with be the "Angels" for our Kindergarten Christmas Pageant on December 19th.  Our costumes are already made and are adorable!  I will send a photo of what is needed to wear under your child's costume this week.  Each class sings a song in the pageant and we have been assigned "Angels We Have Heard on High" - we will practice many times in class and in rehearsals, but I you might want to add to your song list for this season.  We begin Pageant rehearsals tomorrow!

Please make plans to attend our Christmas Pageant on Wednesday, December 19th at 11:00 in the Church Fellowship Hall.  Invite grandparents, aunts, cousins and friends.  We always have a packed house.  It's wonderful.  My in-laws drive from North Georgia every year to see our 13 minute long pageant.  It's one of their favorite holiday traditions.

Y Week - "When I Was Young in the Mountains"

Week of November 11-14
Sound of the Week - Y
Phonics - /y/
Book of the Week - "When I Was Young in the Mountains"
Mom of the Month - Pam Hamilton
Habit - Courtesy

What a blessing to watch your children last week at Veteran's Day program! They were genuinely concerned and interested in the obligation and sacrifice of our United States Veterans. We enjoyed opening the wall with Mrs. Jernigan's class and meeting one of our fellow kindergarteners, Emmalyn Deavours, grandpa, Colonel Kemp.

Our Book of the Week,  When I Was Young in the Mountains by Cynthia Rylant is a wonderful story of "the way it used to  be." The students are shocked to learn that we grew up with no cell phones, only 4 Atlanta television stations, no iPads and no microwave ovens, no email, computers, etc.  It is always special to have a grandparent come and read
this week each year and then have the children ask them about "what it was like" when they were young.  If your parents might be available to read Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday - we would love to have them.

We practiced our habit of Courtesy many times especially as we greeted and reached out to the many Veterans.  Please read through the Courtesy page that was sent home last week and encourage this at home.

Week of November 4-7

Sound of the Week - V
Phonics /v/ and review of all consonants and vowels to date
Book of the WeekAll Those Secrets of the World
Habit of the Month - Courtesy
Parent of the Month -Pam Hamilton

Please return Veteran's Day form that was sent home on Thursday to let me know your plans for Veteran's Day service.  This is a wonderful week in Kindergarten as we study what is means to be a United States Veteran.  We will study the different branches of the military and talk about the commitment and sacrifice in serving our country this way.

Our book of the week, All Those Secrets of the World, by Jane Yolen is a bittersweet tale of a child's impressions of her father's departure to war and then the conflicting emotions when he returns.  The story is set in WWII.  The illustrations are beautiful.

Please join us on Wednesday, November 6  at 9:30 a.m. for our PCS Veteran's Day Celebration.  Every year, this day is one of the most memorable of the school year.  On Wednesday morning, the auditorium will be filled with our students, parents, teachers, and administrators and hundreds of  Veterans!

If you have family members attending that are Veterans we would love to have them read on Wednesday morning.  Please text me.
Veteran's Day is CHAPEL DRESS!  WE WILL SEND SEVERAL REMINDERS!

W Week - "W"acky Wednesday and "Warm As Wool"

Sound of the Week - W
Book of the Week - Warm as Wool
Moms of the Month - Pam Hamilton
Habit - Attention

As you know, temperatures are dropping.  We go outside around 10:00 a.m. each morning where it is still pretty chilly in the shade.    Please remember to send a sweatshirt or jacket with your child.  We will plan to play outside unless it is raining.  Thank you.

Speaking of cold children, our book this week Warm as Wool, by Scott Russell Sanders, is a wonderful story set in 1803, and describes the pioneer life of  Betsy Ward and her three children.  After traveling by covered wagon to the woods of Ohio, she seizes a chance to buy eight sheep.  Raising sheep and children proves to be quite difficult.  This great story of a pioneer mom providing for her family spurs much great conversation with this age group.  Moms, prepared to be blessed by a page that the students will complete about the wonderful ways that your provide for them.

Looking forward to a full four-day week of great activities with the sound "W".  Kindergartners commonly confuse the sound of  "W" so it will be "w"onderful to go ahead and hit this one head on.

What a blessing it was to meet with most of you last week in our parent conferences.  It is evident that the hearts of your children are your priority.

"W" Week includes WACKY WEDNESDAY (based on the Dr. Suess book of the same name) the children will arrive to a classroom turned upside down, the calendar numbers in the wrong order..just like the book.  Your child may dress "Wacky" for this day...mismatch socks, shirt on backwards, crazy hair.  No costumes or masks.

At PCS, we don't mention the October 31st holiday as many families respectfully don't participate.  So, no costumes or extra treats.

On Thursday, we will be having Waffles with Whipped Cream around 9:45 a.m.   Whew!

You should have received information about Veteran's Day Service the first week of November.  Let us know if you need extra stars for Veterans.

This is the last week of a very busy month and I want to say a huge "thank-you" to Rachel Brubaker.  You have gone above and beyond with many extras and it has been a joy to have you in the classroom.  Pam, I will send November Mom of the Month info out in the next couple of days.

"K" Week - The Great "K"apok Tree

Book of the Week - The Great Kapok Tree

Mom of the Month - Rachel Brubaker

Thank you for your grace the past two weeks with me being out with jury duty and helping with Carol's memorial service.  I am sorry that I didn't update the blog last Sunday night - but your kids didn't skip a beat and always fill my days with joy.  They really do.

As many of you have heard and read in emails, we lost a dear friend and fellow mom at PCS last week.  Carol Sylvester was my friend and neighbor (during the season of babies, PCS early days, etc.) - and the one who said 13 years ago...doesn't matter if you are not a Perimeter member - you should look into this great school. I was so blessed to be a part of this school body that really became the church and support to the Sylvester family during this past two weeks.  So grateful to be here and thankful that your children (who I have fallen in love with)...are a part of this awesome Body of Christ.  Needed to say this.

We had a quick but special week this past week with our Papa Piccolo book.  The children love this story and will recall it as one of their favorites.  Many thanks to Rachel Brubaker who has spent much time in our classroom the past two weeks.  This is a busy month to be MOM - we appreciate you.

THIS WEEK’S BOOK
The Kapok Tree by Lynn Cherry

The inside covers of this book have a gorgeous map of the world surrounded by rainforest animals. Don’t miss these! This week we will be discussing the amazing creativity of our infinite God as seen through the rainforest and its inhabitants.  (Genesis 1)  We will also discuss God’s charge to Adam, and to us, to care for His creation.  (Genesis 2)  Lynn Cherry writes from the secular perspective of “saving what we have.”  We will discuss this book from the Biblical perspective of “celebrating and caring for what He’s given.” We will also learn the names of the layers of the rainforest and the some of the plants and animals there.

Looking forward to conferences next Thursday, October 25th. Will send reminder email with our final time schedule (nothing has changed since last time we sent out).
Make plans to attend the PCS School Play - Peter Pan on October 25th and 26th.
The PCS plays are always wonderful!

I love your children!  Kay

Mom of the Month - Rachel Brubaker

I learned this afternoon (after being on standby) that my group was called for Fulton County jury duty.  I will unfortunately be out tomorrow.  Mrs. Peake will be my sub.  She is wonderful! (she is Mrs. William's daughter and is an experienced teacher and  was one of my  children's favorite babysitters when they were young so I know that I am leaving my students in good hands).

Conference Sign Up coming tonight!  You will receive and email tonight asking you for your 1st and 2nd choice for conference times for Thursday, October 24th conferences.  Please respond ASAP.  I am sorry that I am just getting the sign up sheet out to you.

Our books of the week are Exodus and The Little Engine that Could - I am sending the Exodus home book to be read with your student.  It is a beautiful book, but sometimes difficult to get through with your child.  I would recommend breaking into 2 reading times.
I am sure that most of you have The Little Engine that Could at home - I feel strongly that this is a must read for Kindergartners (and it was a part of my Young 5 curriculum).  Feel free to have your child narrate either book this week.

Reminder that next Monday, October 14th is a Teacher Work day and all of PCS will be off this day.

Artist of the Year...
This week we will introducing our Artist for the Year (in Kindergarten), John James Audobon.  We learn that he is a student and lover of nature and came to be known as the "man who drew birds".  We will take a good long look at his mallard duck picture.  We will also do our very first picture study  of McCloskey's drawing of ducks on Wednesday and then a reproduction drawing.

Week of September 16-19

Phonics Sounds - /c/ and /d/
Book of the Week - The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle
Mom of the Month - Kelly Clements
Habit - Obedience

We had a special week last week with our very first Chapel.  Your children were well -behaved and stayed engaged and interested. The water pistols were a hit.

What a joy to see how much your children love to be outside.  We spent much of our time at the Perimeter pond and studied our Perimeter swans.  It made our "Ugly Duckling" book much richer.  Your children are concerned about the swans as it seems that the local geese are chasing them away from the pond daily.

It was great to meet last Tuesday night.  Please remember to let me know the number from  your family that will be a part of our Apple Orchard Field Trip on September 26th.  I have only heard from 5 families.

Looking forward to studying the well-loved Eric Carle book, The Very Hungry Caterpillar.   Kelly Clements, our Mom of the Month, has given our class a gift of many outstanding books that will help supplement our book studies this month.  If you have any Eric Carle books, puzzles or games at home, this would be a great week to pull them out and enjoy them as a family.   We will review the Days of the Week, practice recognizing the days of week as sight words, discuss the life-cycle of a Butterfly (thanks Kelly for the yummy snack on Thursday), make butterfly "blob" art, and much more.

Important Dates to Remember:

Lee Class Parent Meeting - Tuesday, September 10th in our classroom, 6:15 p.m.

First School-wide Chapel - Wednesday, September 11th - Main Sanctuary - 8:30 a.m..
Thanks, Kelly Clements for being our chapel mom this month!  Children must wear Dressy Enrichment (Chapel Attire) please contact me with questions and review in school handbook.  Unfortunately, those not dressed appropriately will have to sit in Mrs. Crist's office during chapel.  This means appropriate khaki shirts, white blouse and navy sweater with dress shoes for girls - navy blazer or navy sweater, TIE, khaki pants and dress shoes for boys.

What a blessing to be the teacher in this class of children that love to learn by exploring and doing!  I am sure that you have heard about our wonderful walks around the pond this week and the at least 15 turtles that seem to swim toward the class when we stop to look.  It's amazing.  I have been calling them to turtle whisperers.  As we study The Ugly Duckling this week I plan to take this class a little deeper into God's creation as we will do daily observations of the two swans on our campus, nature sketches, differences in ducks and swans, we will even solve the mystery of how the swans came to live on our campus!  This class loves to learn outdoors and could stay outside most of the day.

Our large playground has been torn down and is being replaced.  We had hoped it would be up and ready by the end of this week but was not delivered last week as planned.  I am sure that the children will keep you updated.

Thursday, September 26th - Class Field Trip to Reese Apple Orchards.
Pam Hamilton is helping me to plan this wonderful School day.  We will give out more information at the Parent Meeting on Tuesday night.  This is a family event if interested!  We have at 10:00 a.m. reservation at Reese Apple Orchards in Ellijay to tour the Orchard on a hayride,  pick a bag of apples, pet the animals in their petting zoo and buy yummy apple baked goods made in their bakery.  Those who would like, can drive straight from their houses to the Orchards that morning OR we can meet at Perimeter so that we can caravan up to Reese's.  We need to know your family's plans by this Friday, September 13th.  Cost - 6.00 for bag of apples, $2 for hayride and $2 for petting zoo = 10.00 per participant.    We will pay at the Orchard.

Your children are a joy!  Have an awesome weekend!

Thank you to Kelly Clements our awesome September mom of the month.  Looking forward to your visit on Tuesday to read our Book of the Week.

This month we will learn and practice the Habit of Obedience!

Please look carefully at the dress code requirements for Dressy Enrichment outfits.  Chapel is NEXT WEDNESDAY, September 11… plan ahead and be ready!  They look so cute and feel so grown up in these outfits, it does prepare them well for Chapel and it’s required!

Some of the fun things that we will do this week are: Numbers and numerals, nickels, names
and hopefully a Nature Walk.

BOTW - Storm in the NIght by Mary Stolz and Pat Cummings

This is a delightful story of a little boy and his grandfather during a thunderstorm.  When the power goes out, they sit on the porch and talk about all kinds of wonderful things that only a grandparent could share.  We’ll look at what God says about grandparents  - Proverbs 16: 31 and 17:6 and Psalm 103:17, and read verses about the voice of God thundering – Job 37: 4 - 5, Psalm 29: 3 and John  12: 28 - 30.  We’ll learn a little about storms… and turning to the Lord when we’re afraid.

Please contact me with any questions.  Hope your long weekend has been restful!

Praying for children!

Phonics Sounds Covered - N/A this week
Habit of Month - (will practice PEARL rules in August and begin
                                Habits in September)
Mom of the Month (August) - Valerie McMichael

It was a pleasure to see all of you Friday morning at the Meet and Greet!  The
children seemed very comfortable and jumped right into classroom activities.

Please take note of these important details for Monday and Tuesday:
Monday - Please walk your child to our classroom on Monday morning.  Plan
on arriving around 8:15 a.m.  Please take many pictures!  Around 8:30,  we
will take a class picture and then jump right into classroom activities. Please
plan to come to the classroom at 11:50 on Monday to pick up your child.
We will do this on Monday only.  On Tuesday, we will plan to do regular
carpool.  The children should be picked up at 12:10.  I will text you with
any changes.

Please send your child with a healthy snack (fruit, crackers, yogurt, veggies, etc.)
on Monday (and every other day!)  Please send a water bottle as well.

Tuesday - Beginning Tuesday morning, all kindergartners will begin our
normal morning routine.  Please drop your child off at the Main Auditorium
entrance.  Adults and safety patrol students will be there to assist your little
ones in getting safely into the building.  Once inside, the kindergarten teachers
and parapros will be there to greet your child and show them where to wait.
Your child may be dropped off beginning at 8:00.  Prior to 8:00, no adults will be
there to monitor your child.

We will be starting regular carpool on Tuesday, however, I would like to come
upstairs around 12 (instead of 12:10) to be one of the first groups in line.  Afternoon
carpool is extremely simple at PCS.  If you would like to drive through
the carpool line just pull through to the Main Entrance.  You will need a sign with
your last name shown clearly.  I have always clipped this sign to a small hanger
and I hang on the rear view mirror.  I will be the one putting your child in your car.
Please text me with any carpool changes prior to 11:30, if possible.  If you would
like to walk up to the Main Entrance to pick up your child, please stand along each
side of the entrance so that the classes can move through.  If you are a "walk-up"
mom, please plan to arrive for the early part of carpool so that when our class is
exiting I can send your child to you.  Of course, and as they will learn on Monday
and Tuesday, they must give me a hug or a high-five before running to their
parent This helps me know that they are moving out of our line and I will watch
them walk to you.

Finally, our first parent meeting is Tuesday evening (August 13th) in our classroom.
We will begin at 7:00 and end around 7:50.   Our time is limited, so your punctuality
is appreciated!

LATE START on Wednesday!  Students can be dropped off starting at 9:00 a.m.

I will be praying for your sweet little ones this weekend!
I ask for your prayers for as we begin our awesome Kindergarten journey.

I am thrilled to be your kindergarten teacher! I began praying for each of you by name today!  I believe that God placed us together for an incredible school year to learn and grow.  In just a week and a half, we will begin our nature walks, building, painting, cooking, daily digging into wonderful books, playing games and math activities.  We will enjoy our awesome playground and lake that is full of tadpoles and other neat creatures.  We will also study God's word that will prayerfully become a part of YOU and your story.
I look forward to meeting each of you very soon as I come to your house to visit!  Please show me all of your favorites including toys, books, legos, dolls, paintings, pictures and especially your pet! Ask me any question that you would like about Kindergarten!   On the first day of school your parents will drop you off in the classroom and days after that I will, I meet you in the front entrance and walk you down to the classroom.  I will not let you get lost.  I would love to hold your hand if you need me. I can't wait to be your teacher.  I returned to teaching four years ago after 15 years of being home with my children.  I was born and raised in Atlanta and have been married to my wonderful husband for 22 years (on August 3rd). We have four children.  My oldest is Annie, who is 18.  She will be a senior at Johns Creek High School next year.   My daughter, Katherine, is 14.  She graduated from PCS last year and will be a freshman at JCHS. I have twin boys, Brittain and Jack, who are 11 years old  and will be in 5th grade at Perimeter.  We have a 7-year-old dog "Chipper" that is sitting at my feet as I type this.  All four of my children attend (have attended) PCS since 1st grade and I know as a parent and now as a teacher that it is an AWESOME place to learn and grow. I included a photo of my family below. I home-schooled my children in their kindergarten years and we read the same wonderful books that we will read in class and then you will take home to read with your family.  These awesome stories are still some of our family favorites.  I will continue to pray for you daily as we prepare for the great things that this school year holds.  Will you pray for your classmates and for me?  God moves great things when we ask Him!  See you soon.
I look forward to replacing the photo above with our very own "first day" class photo.
